WOOD MODELS by Doug Kenney

SCALED REPRODUCTIONS of VINTAGE TRAINS,
FIRE ENGINES,
SUNDIALS AND SOLAR CALENDARS

 How Wood Models.Net got started......

I was teaching ice skating in the mid 70's when my Dad passed away. He left behind woodworking tools built in the 20's and 30's, and I was the only family member who had the time to put them to work; there wasn't much ice skating in July! So I set up shop in the basement of my log cabin on Cape Cod.

In the early 80's I purchased some toy-making plans and proceeded to crank out cars, trucks and planes made out of white pine. I sold them at summer craft fairs on the Cape. Then, I found a local clock maker that was willing to give me their scrap walnut, cherry and mahogany! I loved the addition of color, so I added more detail for realism. My toys turned into scaled models, and a local magazine, CAPE COD LIFE, decided to feature my work!

Because of my fascination for vintage trains and fire engines, I decided to reproduce them in wood, at scales of 1/24 and 1/16. Acquiring engineering drawings of the real thing, I went to work. Rather than copying everything in print, the "artist in me" told me when to stop. At about this time, I discovered the International Wood Collectors Society which led me to sources of colorful, exotic woods from around the world. From this day on, I learned there's no need to paint the wood; the wood was already the color I wanted! I just added polyurethane.

From 1989 to 1997 my work was featured in five national woodworking magazines and appeared on the front cover of the 1989 CONSTANTINE'S woodworking catalog. It was this exposure that led me to a national wood show circuit.

From 1993 to 2000 I joined forces with THE WOOD SHOWS, touring the country, teaching my craft and displaying my models. In 1998 I added sundials and solar calendars to my product line. Today, I'm retired and promoting my parts and plans business; I'm no longer in the assembly line business. I create a prototype, then step-by-step plans with full size drawings, SO YOU CAN BUILD IT! I'm currently drawing up a set of plans to build a vintage, dining car to add to my line of train cars.
